Updated over a week ago

Can I use a CPN or SPN to get an EIN?

No. You cannot use a CPN (Credit Privacy Number) or SPN (Secondary Privacy Number) in place of a Social Security Number to obtain an EIN.

👉 The IRS does not recognize CPNs or SPNs as valid identification for EIN applications.

What should I use instead?

To apply for an EIN without a Social Security Number, you will need to complete Form SS-4 (EIN Application) using valid identifying information.

This may include:

  • Your name

  • Your LLC’s legal name

  • Your foreign address (if applicable)

  • Your Registered Agent’s name and address

  • An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) if available

What is a CPN or SPN?

A CPN or SPN is a nine-digit number sometimes marketed as a way to protect your Social Security Number.

They may also be referred to as:

  • Secondary Credit Numbers (SCN)

Important warning ⚠️

Using a CPN or SPN in place of a Social Security Number on official documents:

  • Is not accepted by the IRS

  • May be considered fraudulent

  • Can potentially result in serious legal consequences, including federal penalties

How should I request an EIN?

The correct way to request an EIN is through your Business Portal.

👉 Go to: Additional Services → Assign EIN

We will:

  • Prepare your EIN application correctly

  • Ensure valid information is used

  • Guide you based on your specific situation

Summary

  • CPNs and SPNs cannot be used to obtain an EIN

  • You must use valid identification (such as SSN or ITIN)
