When do I need more than one registered agent?

Updated over a week ago

Do I ever need more than one Registered Agent?

Yes — you only need one Registered Agent per state, but if your business operates in multiple states, you may need a Registered Agent in each state.

When would I need more than one?

You will need more than one Registered Agent if your business is registered in multiple states.

This typically happens when:

  • You form your LLC in one state (your “home state”)

  • You then register as a foreign entity in additional states

👉 Each state where your business is registered requires its own Registered Agent with a physical address in that state

Example

If your LLC is:

  • Formed in California

  • Registered as a foreign entity in Texas and Florida

You would need:

  • 1 Registered Agent in California

  • 1 Registered Agent in Texas

  • 1 Registered Agent in Florida

What are the requirements in each state?

Each Registered Agent must:

  • Have a physical address in that state

  • Be available in person Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm

  • Be able to receive legal and official documents

How does the Business Portal help?

If you use USA LLC Filing as your Registered Agent:

  • Documents and notices across your entities are organized in your Business Portal

  • You can access everything in one place

  • You receive updates when documents are received

👉 This is especially helpful when managing businesses in multiple states

Summary

  • You need one Registered Agent per state

  • If you operate in multiple states, you need one in each

  • Your Business Portal helps you manage documents and stay organized across all states
